Panaji, 31 August: Leader of Opposition Yuri Alemao launched a sharp attack on the BJP government on the first day of the three-day monsoon session of the Goa Legislative Assembly, accusing the government of failing on health infrastructure, law and order and environmental protection.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Alemao said the condition of the state had deteriorated to such an extent that Goa had been \u201cpushed from the ICU to the CCU\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe way things are going, it looks like the BJP government has pushed Goa from the ICU to the CCU. The situation looks critical. We expect good health infrastructure, but in reality, you get rat bites in GMC. The government has failed on all aspects. We will expose this government in this three-day session,\u201d Alemao said.<\/p>\n

The Opposition also confronted the government over the disallowing of a joint Starred Legislative Assembly Question concerning the \u201cDeclaration and Interpretation of No Development Area under Section 39-A and the Regional Plan\u201d.<\/p>\n

Alemao alleged that by disallowing the question, the government was attempting to avoid scrutiny over Section 39-A and the continuing destruction of environmentally sensitive and pristine areas of Goa.<\/p>\n

He created a ruckus in the House over the issue and accused the BJP government of undermining democratic accountability.<\/p>\n

\u201cDisallowing the question means continuation of the destruction of democracy and the pristine areas of the state. The BJP is using NDA to make money by selling lands,\u201d Alemao alleged.<\/p>\n

During Zero Hour, the Opposition leader also raised concerns over the law-and-order situation, referring to shooting incidents reported in Goa over the past decade, including the recent shoot-out at Porvorim.<\/p>\n

Alemao said the latest incident had again highlighted serious concerns about public safety and policing in the state.<\/p>\n

He also drew the House\u2019s attention to what he described as growing disorder in Panaji, particularly around the casino belt and Mandovi riverfront.<\/p>\n

According to Alemao, incidents of drunken behaviour near parked vehicles outside casinos, street fights and scuffles linked to casino-related human and vehicular traffic had become increasingly common after sunset.<\/p>\n

He claimed that such incidents were gradually becoming the \u201cnew normal\u201d in the capital city and warned that the law-and-order situation was showing signs of collapse.<\/p>\n

With the Opposition raising issues ranging from GMC healthcare and Section 39-A to the Porvorim shoot-out and casino-related disturbances, the opening day of the short three-day Assembly session witnessed heated exchanges, with Alemao indicating that the Opposition would continue to aggressively question the government during the remaining sittings.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
