Panaji, Sept 3: The prolonged agitation by residents of Karapur-Sarvan against the proposed HOABLodha project witnessed a significant development on Thursday, with Chief Minister Dr. Pramod Sawant directing senior officials to verify disputed land records, examine ownership claims and extend all possible assistance to the villagers in accordance with law.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

A delegation of Karapur-Sarvan protesters met the Chief Minister and placed before him their concerns regarding the project, including land ownership issues, relevant documents and the stop-work order issued by the local panchayat.<\/p>\n

Following the meeting, Sawant directed the North Goa Collector to convene a meeting of all concerned departmental officials to examine the issues raised by the villagers. The Deputy Collector, Bicholim, has also been asked to verify land records and ownership claims connected with the project area.<\/p>\n

According to the information emerging after the meeting, the authorities will scrutinise the relevant documents as well as the panchayat’s stop-work order and initiate action wherever legally warranted. Significantly, the Chief Minister assured that if the villagers’ ownership claims over the disputed land are established, necessary steps would be initiated to restore the land to its rightful owners.<\/p>\n

However, Sawant made it clear that the government cannot immediately shut down the project, particularly as related matters are pending before the court. Any decision on the future of the project, he said, would have to follow a detailed examination of all legal aspects.<\/p>\n

The protesters described Thursday’s interaction with the Chief Minister as their “best meeting ever” and termed the development a major breakthrough in their continuing agitation.<\/p>\n

After months of protests and demands for government intervention, the villagers said they would now wait for two days to see whether the directions issued by the Chief Minister translate into concrete administrative action.<\/p>\n

The latest development has therefore shifted the Karapur-Sarvan dispute to a crucial stage, with the focus now firmly on the Collector and revenue authorities.
