Kharge’s Goa Visit Exposes Cracks in Congress: Amit Patkar Questions Party’s Seriousness Ahead of 2027

Panaji, August 13: At a time when the Congress is attempting to project unity and organisational strength ahead of the 2027 Goa Assembly elections, former Goa Pradesh Congress Committee president Amit Patkar’s startling admission that he was unaware of AICC president Mallikarjun Kharge’s proposed Goa visit on August 17 has brought apparent cracks within the State Congress into sharp focus.

Patkar publicly stated that he had no information about Kharge’s reported visit to Goa. His remarks assume significance because the Congress leadership has been preparing for the 2027 Assembly elections and stressing the need for unity and stronger coordination within the organisation. Reports confirm that Kharge is expected to visit Goa and interact with booth-level workers and other party functionaries on August 17.

What has made Patkar’s statement politically more damaging for the party is his open expression of disappointment over the manner in which he has allegedly been kept out of the loop.

“I have tirelessly worked for the party for the last four-and-a-half years. Even after my dedication to the party, if the present team does not feel the need to take me into confidence, then I doubt whether the party is serious about the coming elections and defeating the BJP,” Patkar said.

The statement amounts to more than the routine expression of displeasure by a former office-bearer. Coming from a leader who headed the GPCC and was at the forefront of the Congress organisation during a crucial period, it raises uncomfortable questions about communication, coordination and confidence-building within the party.

The timing is particularly significant. The Goa Congress has stepped up preparations for the 2027 elections, with its leadership talking about strengthening the organisation from the booth level and presenting a united challenge to the BJP. Against this backdrop, a former State president claiming that he was unaware of the national president’s visit could provide ammunition to critics questioning whether the Congress leadership itself is functioning as a cohesive unit.

Patkar, however, welcomed Kharge’s proposed Goa visit and stressed that the Congress needs to remain strong and united if it wants to win the 2027 elections. His concern, therefore, appears directed not against the national president’s visit but towards the functioning and approach of the present State leadership.

The episode also comes at a politically sensitive stage for the Congress. The party has been exploring Opposition consolidation ahead of 2027, while simultaneously attempting to rebuild its grassroots machinery across Goa. Congress and Goa Forward Party leaders have previously indicated the possibility of cooperation for the Assembly polls.

This makes Patkar’s remarks difficult for the party leadership to brush aside as an isolated grievance. If a former GPCC president who led the organisation until recently feels that he is not being taken into confidence over a major programme involving the party’s national president, questions are bound to arise over how effectively the Congress is managing its senior leaders.

For a party seeking to convince Goans that it can provide a credible alternative to the BJP in 2027, internal coordination will be as important as alliances, candidates and campaign strategy.

Kharge’s August 17 visit was expected to send a message of organisational mobilisation. Patkar’s remarks, however, have ensured that before the national president even lands in Goa, the spotlight has shifted to another question: Can the Congress first put its own house in order before asking Goa to trust it with power in 2027?
