Goa, October 8:Tambdi Maati Foundation (TMF) celebrated its first anniversary on Gandhi Jayanti by honouring the artisans and masons who have played a vital role in promoting natural construction, traditional craftsmanship and sustainable building practices in Goa.

The celebration recognised the dedication, perseverance and skills of the Foundation’s trained team of artisans, whose commitment to learning new techniques while preserving ancestral knowledge of plants, crafts and mud construction has been instrumental in its work.

Most of the artisans originally hail from Jharkhand, West Bengal and Bihar but have since made Goa their home, contributing their traditional skills and expertise to the Foundation’s initiatives.

The anniversary programme featured three special guests who shared their perspectives on environmental conservation, education and community building.

Environmental activist Avertino Miranda, who has been actively campaigning against environmental destruction in Goa, emphasised the urgent need to protect Jal, Jungle and Zameen (water, forests and land).

Archana Rao, a teacher and former Teach For India fellow, highlighted the continuing relevance of Mahatma Gandhi’s concept of Nayi Taleem, which advocates the holistic development of the head, heart and hands. She also stressed the growing importance of skill-based education in the age of artificial intelligence.

Saniya Nihalani spoke about the significance of community building, collective responsibility and solidarity in creating a sustainable and inclusive society.

A highlight of the celebration was the presentation of ‘Mud Matters’, a zine designed by Anish Afonso featuring hand-drawn illustrations that challenge common myths and misconceptions surrounding mud construction.

The Foundation presented certificates to its team of artisans in recognition of their contributions and commitment to traditional building practices.

The programme concluded with a colourful cultural presentation in which artisans performed traditional songs and dances representing their respective regions, celebrating the diversity of cultures that have come together through the Foundation.

Expressing gratitude to its artisans, supporters and well-wishers, Tambdi Maati Foundation reaffirmed its commitment to promoting natural construction, preserving traditional knowledge and encouraging responsible stewardship of land and natural resources.

The celebration also highlighted the importance of recognising the dignity of skilled labour and the valuable contribution of traditional artisans to environmentally sustainable development.
