Panaji, October 30: The Goa Government has decided to approach the Supreme Court to overcome the legal hurdles surrounding political reservation for the Scheduled Tribe (ST) community in the Goa Legislative Assembly, following the recent interim order of the Bombay High Court at Goa.
The decision was taken at a high-level meeting chaired by Chief Minister Dr. Pramod Sawant on Friday to review the legal implications of the High Court’s order and formulate a strategy to safeguard the ST community’s political rights ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections.
The meeting was attended by Goa Legislative Assembly Speaker Dr. Ganesh Gaonkar, Tribal Welfare Minister Ramesh Tawadkar, Advocate General Devidas Pangam, BJP Goa President Damu Naik, Advocate Narendra Sawaikar and prominent ST community leaders and representatives.
After detailed deliberations, the participants unanimously agreed to pursue the matter before the Supreme Court and initiate necessary legal measures to protect the process of granting political reservation to the ST community.
As an immediate step, a delegation led by Tribal Welfare Minister Ramesh Tawadkar will travel to New Delhi to consult Solicitor General of India Tushar Mehta on the legal strategy and further proceedings before the apex court.
Chief Minister Sawant reiterated that his government remains committed to securing political reservation for the ST community in the forthcoming 2027 Goa Assembly elections.
He maintained that the State Government has consistently pursued the long-pending demand with the Central Government and would continue making every possible effort to overcome legal obstacles.
The latest development comes amid growing concern within the ST community over the uncertainty surrounding political reservation following the High Court’s interim intervention.
While the government has reaffirmed its commitment, the outcome of the proposed Supreme Court proceedings will be crucial in determining whether ST political reservation can be implemented in time for the 2027 Assembly elections.
