Panaji, September 2: Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar on Wednesday interacted with more than 1,000 Booth Level Officers (BLOs) from across Goa, describing them as the “first point of contact” between the Election Commission of India and citizens.

Addressing the gathering, Kumar said BLOs form a foundational pillar of the world’s largest democracy and play a crucial role in the preparation and maintenance of electoral rolls.

He stressed that preparation of electoral rolls and conduct of elections in India are carried out strictly in accordance with the Constitution, applicable laws and instructions issued by the Election Commission of India.

The CEC specifically appreciated the contribution of Goa’s BLOs, saying they have played and continue to play an instrumental role in ensuring accuracy and integrity of electoral rolls.

Kumar also pointed out that electoral rolls as well as the wider election process are subject to scrutiny and audit through Booth Level Agents (BLAs) appointed by recognised political parties, along with polling and counting agents of candidates.

During the programme, short videos explaining the roles of BLOs in Konkani and BLAs in English were released. A cultural programme showcasing Goa’s traditions and heritage was also organised.

The interaction also included a question-and-answer session, giving BLOs an opportunity to directly raise queries and clarify doubts with the Chief Election Commissioner.

The Election Commission said the interaction was aimed at strengthening coordination at the grassroots level and reinforcing the role of BLOs in maintaining reliable electoral rolls and ensuring smooth conduct of elections.
