Valpoi, 15 August: Sameer Govekar, Vishwasrao Rane and a group of youth from Sattari paid tribute to the legendary Dipaji Rane and the freedom fighters who fought alongside him, during a visit to the historic Nanus Fort at Valpoi.

The visit was organised to honour the memory and contribution of Dipaji Rane and his associates, who fought against Portuguese rule and played a significant role in Sattari’s history of resistance.

Paying homage at the historic site, the group recalled the courage and sacrifices of Dipaji Rane and other freedom fighters who stood up against colonial rule. The youth stressed the need to preserve their legacy and ensure that the younger generation is made aware of Sattari’s contribution to Goa’s history.

Speaking on the occasion, Sameer Govekar demanded that the Goa government construct a statue of Dipaji Rane at Cashew Circle in Valpoi as a fitting tribute to the legendary leader.

Govekar said that a prominent statue in the heart of Valpoi would not only honour Dipaji Rane but would also serve as a reminder to future generations of his courage, struggle and contribution.

He further said that financial constraints should not become an obstacle to the project. If the government is willing to construct the statue but is unable to provide the required funds, Govekar said that he and the youth of Sattari are prepared to take the initiative to mobilise financial support from the people of the region.

“We are ready to raise funds from the people of Sattari and extend all possible support to the government for the construction of Dipaji Rane’s statue,” Govekar said.

The group urged the government to take a positive decision on the proposal and give Dipaji Rane a prominent and permanent memorial at Valpoi in recognition of his historic contribution and legacy.
