Sattari, Oct 7: Villagers and members of the local tribal community of Soliye in Honda, Sattari, have unanimously opposed the proposed mining activity by M/s Agrawanshi Pvt. Ltd. in Survey No. 123/1, raising concerns over its potential impact on forests, biodiversity and their traditional livelihoods.

At a meeting held on October 4, villagers resolved to oppose the proposed mining activity, maintaining that the area has ecological as well as traditional significance for the local community.

The villagers expressed apprehension that mining operations could adversely affect the area’s forest cover, biodiversity, natural resources and the livelihoods of families traditionally dependent on the land and forests.

They also raised concerns over alleged unauthorised entry into the area, tree cutting and mining-related activities at the site. According to the villagers, these issues have been detailed in complaints submitted to the Forest Department and the Deputy Collector, seeking intervention by the authorities.

The villagers maintained that the local tribal community has an ancestral and traditional relationship with the land and surrounding forests. For generations, community members have depended on forest resources, including medicinal plants and other natural produce, they said.

They demanded immediate intervention by the authorities to protect the land and forest and safeguard the rights and traditional interests of the local tribal community.

Addressing the gathering, environmentalist and activist Abhijit Prabhudesai highlighted the role traditionally played by tribal communities in conserving forests and maintaining the ecological balance.

“Tribal communities have traditionally protected their lands, forests and natural resources. Their role as protectors and custodians of the land and its biodiversity needs to be recognised,” Prabhudesai said.

The villagers said they would continue to raise the issue before the concerned authorities and seek protection of the area’s forest resources and their traditional rights.
