Money for Foreign Junkets, But No Money to Maintain Anjuna Beach? Locals Question GTDC

Anjuna, Oct. 3: Locals have raised concerns over the deteriorating condition of Anjuna Beach, questioning the Goa Tourism Development Corporation (GTDC) over alleged poor maintenance and inadequate lighting at the tourism site.

Residents claimed that large portions of the area remain in darkness, raising safety concerns and apprehensions over possible anti-social activities.

They pointed out that land belonging to local residents had been acquired for development of the beach and questioned why an important tourism asset was now being neglected.

“Government speaks about ‘Viksit Goa’, but what is the meaning of development if assets created using local people’s land are subsequently neglected? Incomplete Vikas is equivalent to No Vikas,” the locals stated.

They also questioned the government’s spending priorities, asking how resources could be available for foreign tourism-related junkets while basic maintenance of Anjuna Beach remained inadequate.

The locals have demanded immediate inspection of the area and restoration of proper lighting, cleanliness, maintenance and safety measures.

“Tourism infrastructure cannot be developed merely for announcements and photographs. It must be maintained and kept safe for locals, tourists and other stakeholders,” they said.

The residents warned that if their concerns continued to be ignored, they would decide their future course of action.
