Goa Congress Launches People’s Dandi March
to Expose BJP Government’s Destruction of Goa

Panaji, 12: The Goa Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) launched the People’s Dandi March in Velsao on 12 March, commemorating Mahatma Gandhi’s Salt March of 1930. Just as Gandhi’s march grew into a nationwide movement against colonial injustice, the GPCC aims to mobilize Goans against projects imposed without public consent.

Local Struggles in Velsao

The protest began in solidarity with residents of Velsao, who allege railway double tracking work has encroached on private land despite ongoing legal disputes. Locals highlighted hardships caused by debris blocking access roads and drainage channels, worsening conditions during monsoons.

Government Criticism

GPCC President Amit Patkar condemned the government for proceeding with work despite court cases and Survey of India examination. He accused the BJP government of using police and administrative machinery to push projects while disregarding people’s rights.

March Across Goa

Patkar announced that the People’s Dandi March will travel statewide from 12 March to 6 April, connecting communities in Mirabag, Curtorim, Vasco, and other areas where citizens resist projects imposed without consent. He warned that if the government continues to ignore public voices, Goans may intensify their struggle with a “Jail Bharo” movement.

Voices of the People

Residents like Sandra Bai described daily hardships due to blocked access roads and waterlogging. Locals also reported police cases filed against peaceful protesters, raising concerns about violation of property rights and democratic freedoms.

Congress Commitment

The GPCC reiterated its resolve to stand with Goans in protecting land, environment, and constitutional rights. The party emphasized that development cannot be imposed through intimidation or by bypassing legal processes.

Leaders in Attendance

The protest saw participation from District President Savio D’Silva, Orville Dourado Rodrigues, Moreno Rebello, Chirag Naik, Wasim Khan, Olencio Simoes, Sandra Rodrigues, OBC Chairman Sharad Chopdekar, Mahesh Nadar, Nandadeep Raut, and several local residents.
