Panaji: Leader of Opposition Yuri Alemao has accused Chief Minister Dr. Pramod Sawant is misleading the people of Goa on the issue of women’s reservation.
Alemao stated that the Congress has consistently demanded implementation of 33% reservation for women within the existing Lok Sabha framework, without linking it to delimitation. He asserted that the BJP should not lecture others on women’s empowerment, claiming that the Congress has historically ensured representation by appointing women as President, Prime Minister, and Speaker.
Targeting the state government, Alemao alleged that the BJP has failed to provide adequate space to women MLAs in the Goa cabinet and has “cheated” women through unfulfilled promises such as free LPG cylinders.
He further criticised the government, saying democracy is being reduced to a “one-act play” and accused it of functioning in a dictatorial manner. Alemao also claimed that the proposed constitutional amendment related to women’s reservation was not aimed at empowering women but at altering India’s electoral structure—an attempt he said the opposition successfully resisted.
