163 Screened at Dharbandora Cancer Detection Camp; 14 Benign Breast Tumours, Seven Precancerous Oral Lesions Detected

Dharbandora, July 11: A Cancer Detection Abhiyaan camp organised at the Primary Health Centre (PHC), Dharbandora, witnessed an encouraging public response, with 163 persons undergoing cancer screening and health check-ups. The camp was inaugurated in the presence of ZP member Samiksha Naik, Usgaon Sarpanch Rajendra Naik, Nodal Officer and Professor & Head of Department, Goa Medical College Dr. Jagadish A. Kakodkar, Professor & HoD, Goa Dental College Dr. Ameeta Kenkre, Medical Officer In-Charge of PHC Dharbandora Dr. Manjusha Gaude, and Dr. Asmita Kunkoliekar from the NCD Cell, Directorate of Health Services.

According to the organisers, 55 men and 108 women participated in the screening camp.

A total of 54 women underwent gynaecology OPD examinations, while 33 patients were examined in the surgery OPD and 45 underwent dental examinations.

As part of breast cancer screening, 10 women underwent sonomammography and four underwent digital mammography. The examinations detected 14 benign breast tumours, with 10 cases categorised as BIRADS-1, one as BIRADS-2, and three as BIRADS-3, requiring further evaluation and follow-up.

To screen for cervical cancer, 31 Pap smear tests were conducted.

Several other diagnostic investigations were also carried out during the camp, including six Complete Blood Count (CBC) tests, one PSA test, eight Thyroid Function Tests (TFTs), six Renal Function Tests (RFTs), seven Liver Function Tests (LFTs), two Iron Studies, three Lipid Profile tests, one FSH/LH test, two CA-125 tests, and two each for Vitamin D and Vitamin B12.

The oral cancer screening team from Goa Dental College and Hospital identified seven precancerous oral lesions, including three cases of leukoplakia, two cases of tobacco pouch keratosis, one case of oral lichen planus, and one case of oral submucous fibrosis. Additionally, two cases of oral candidiasis and one traumatic ulcer were detected.

Doctors participating in the camp emphasised that early detection remains the most effective strategy in reducing cancer-related mortality. They urged people, particularly those with tobacco habits or a family history of cancer, to undergo regular screening and seek timely medical consultation if any symptoms are noticed.

The organisers described the camp as a successful initiative towards promoting early diagnosis, preventive healthcare and cancer awareness among the people of Dharbandora and surrounding areas.
