Panaji: Eminent Portuguese parliamentarian and legal scholar of Goan origin, Dr Narana Sinai Coissoró, has passed away, drawing tributes from Goa for his distinguished contribution to public life and his enduring attachment to his birthplace.

Aldona MLA and lawyer Carlos Alvares Ferreira expressed grief over Coissoró’s demise, describing him as a brilliant and reputed son of Goa who went on to become a prominent political figure in Portugal.

Born in Goa, Coissoró moved to Portugal at the age of 18. He later qualified as a lawyer and also served as a Professor of Law.

According to Ferreira, Coissoró was first elected to the Portuguese Parliament in June 1976 and went on to serve through several Assemblies. He later held the post of Deputy Speaker of the Portuguese Parliament from 1995 to 2005.

Ferreira recalled meeting Coissoró on two occasions during his visits to Goa along with his daughter Smita.

“His love for Goa was unparalleled,” Ferreira said, recalling Coissoró as a sharp, focused and engaging personality during their discussions.

Paying tribute, Ferreira said Portugal had lost a tall leader while Goa had lost one of its distinguished sons.

He conveyed his condolences to the bereaved family and prayed for the departed soul to rest in eternal peace.
