Huge Crowd at Amit Patkar’s Dahi Handi Sparks Political Buzz in Curchorem

Curchorem, 5 September: A massive turnout at a Dahi Handi competition organised by Congress leader and former Goa Pradesh Congress Committee president Amit Patkar has set political circles in Curchorem abuzz, with the gathering being viewed as an early show of strength ahead of the 2027 Goa Assembly election.

What was organised as part of the Gokulashtami celebrations quickly acquired political significance as a huge crowd turned up for the event. The response assumes importance at a time when political activity in Curchorem is gradually intensifying and several aspirants are reportedly positioning themselves for the next Assembly contest.

Adding another layer of intrigue was the presence of Patkar’s political opponent Rohan Gauns Dessai, who personally participated in the Dahi Handi celebrations along with his team. His participation at an event organised by Patkar inevitably generated considerable political gossip in the constituency.

While participation in a cultural programme need not necessarily indicate any political realignment, the optics have attracted attention at a time when political equations in Curchorem appear increasingly fluid.

Patkar had contested the 2022 Assembly election from Curchorem on the Congress ticket and lost to BJP candidate Nilesh Cabral by a narrow margin. That close contest has ensured that Patkar remains one of the principal political players in the constituency.

His recent relief from the responsibility of GPCC president has now given Patkar considerably more space to concentrate on Curchorem. Political observers believe the Dahi Handi programme could be an early indication that he intends to rebuild and consolidate his constituency-level organisation well ahead of 2027.

The timing is particularly significant.

Several political aspirants have already begun groundwork in Curchorem, making the constituency potentially one of the more interesting contests to watch. At the same time, sitting MLA Nilesh Cabral is understood to be facing internal political pressure within the BJP, adding another dimension to the emerging battle.

Against this backdrop, the tremendous response to Patkar’s Dahi Handi competition is unlikely to be viewed merely as the success of a cultural event.

Large public gatherings are often closely watched in Goa’s constituency-driven politics, particularly when organised by leaders preparing for an electoral battle. The turnout has therefore provided Patkar an opportunity to demonstrate his continuing grassroots connect after stepping away from the demanding responsibility of heading the state Congress organisation.

For Patkar, the political challenge is clear. Having come close in 2022, he now needs to protect his political space from emerging aspirants while simultaneously strengthening the Congress organisation and expanding his support base.

For Cabral, meanwhile, the developments mean that the political temperature in his constituency could begin rising much earlier than expected.

And the presence of Rohan Gauns Dessai at Patkar’s event has only made the political picture more interesting.

There is still considerable time before the 2027 Assembly election, and cultural-event crowds cannot automatically be translated into electoral support. But in Curchorem, where the previous election was decided by a relatively narrow margin, every mobilisation, new entrant and shifting political equation is likely to be scrutinised.

Patkar’s Dahi Handi may have been organised to celebrate Gokulashtami, but the size of the gathering has sent a distinctly political message: the battle for Curchorem has already begun to warm up.
