Margao, 20 July: Youth leader Prabhav Naik has demanded an immediate investigation into the alleged defacement of the historic Lohia Maidan in Margao and called for strict action against those responsible for the graffiti reportedly written on the backdrop wall and stage skirting during the night of July 19.

Reacting to slogans such as “Save Wangchuk” and “Sonam Matters” found at the site, Naik termed the incident an act of vandalism and said it also vindicated the consistent stand of Madganvcho Awaaz that the administration had failed to adequately protect and preserve the historic monument.

Naik said those responsible for the defacement should be identified and prosecuted to ensure that such acts are not repeated at heritage sites.

Highlighting the historical significance of Lohia Maidan, Naik said it was the site associated with Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia, Dr. Juliao Menezes and several freedom fighters who ignited the flame of Goa’s freedom movement, which ultimately culminated in the state’s liberation. He stressed that a place of such historical importance deserved the highest level of protection, preservation and respect.

Naik further alleged that Lohia Maidan had suffered from official neglect, pointing to poorly maintained urinals, broken benches, overgrown weeds and inadequate upkeep of the premises. He said Madganvcho Awaaz had consistently raised concerns over the condition and maintenance of the historic site.

He urged the government to immediately restore the defaced portions of the monument and undertake comprehensive beautification and conservation works. He also called for the installation of CCTV cameras, stronger security arrangements and regular maintenance of the premises.

“Heritage monuments cannot be left vulnerable to vandalism because of administrative negligence,” Naik said, urging the authorities to take concrete steps to protect the sanctity and historical significance of Lohia Maidan.
