Swapnesh Sherlekar, Move Forward

Goan social activist Swapnesh Sherlekar has come to represent fearless truth-telling in a time when few dare to speak plainly. Through carefully researched, evidence-backed videos, Sherlekar has raised sharp, uncomfortable questions about how the government functions. His clarity of thought and unflinching tone have unsettled those in power.

It is the kind of work one once expected from the media. But with much of the press now bowed under political pressure, it has fallen upon independent journalists and social activists to act as the true defenders of democracy.

Hailing from Mulgaon in Bicholim, Sherlekar spent his childhood and schooling years in a convent institution in Vasco — an experience that shaped his respect for all faiths and communities. Armed with an engineering degree and long experience in the pharmaceutical sector, he brings not only intellect but also a sense of empathy to his activism. He understands both the importance of religious tradition and the reality of social inequality.

Coming from a Bhandari farming family, Sherlekar gave up a well-paid corporate career to dedicate himself to social work and to the protection of Goa’s land and heritage. Today, he is involved in research, legal battles and public awareness campaigns with organisations such as the Goa Foundation.

Many wonder how activists like him manage to sustain themselves. But as Sherlekar often says, those who work with sincerity for the public good are never abandoned — the community steps in quietly, without expectation of recognition. A society that may appear indifferent from the outside, he believes, remains deeply compassionate within.

During Navratri, Sherlekar released a video explaining the ecological importance of the Vyaghrakshetra (Tiger Zone), an intervention that caused discomfort for the BJP. In response, Karina Shirodkar, a recent entrant to the party, lodged a complaint accusing him of hurting religious sentiments. On that basis, an FIR was filed, and the police began summoning him repeatedly for questioning.

Sherlekar moved the Bombay High Court at Goa, which ruled that the police had no authority to seize his mobile phone and could only seek specific information directly from him — a clear setback for the police.

The voice of Swapnesh Sherlekar has become the voice of Goa’s democracy. Any attempt to silence it is an attack on freedom of thought and expression. Supporting such fearless individuals is the duty of every conscious citizen.

The movement to save Goa is not the struggle of one person; it belongs to the people. It is time for Goans to stand shoulder to shoulder with this young activist and say together:
Swapnesh Sherlekar, move forward — we are with you.
