Panaji : Amit Patkar served as the President of the Goa Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) from March 2022 until May 2026, leading the party during one of its most challenging phases in Goa politics. He was appointed by Congress President Sonia Gandhi following the 2022 Goa Assembly elections as part of the party’s effort to bring in a younger generation of leadership.
At the time of his appointment, Patkar emerged as one of the youngest leaders to head the Goa Congress. The leadership reshuffle was aimed at rebuilding the party organisation after electoral setbacks and strengthening its grassroots presence across the state. He worked alongside several district and block-level leaders to reorganise the party structure and reconnect with workers at the village and booth levels.
During his tenure, Patkar consistently raised issues related to unemployment, inflation, environmental concerns, governance, infrastructure projects, land conversions, mining-related matters and public welfare. Under his leadership, the Congress positioned itself as a major opposition force against the BJP government in Goa.
Patkar also focused on organisational strengthening by appointing office-bearers, reviving block committees and expanding the party’s presence among youth, women and grassroots workers. Several organisational committees and office-bearer appointments were made during his tenure to rebuild the Congress network across Goa.
He actively participated in public agitations, protests and campaigns on issues affecting farmers, fishermen, workers, students and various community groups. The Goa Congress under his leadership repeatedly highlighted concerns related to governance, employment generation and protection of Goa’s identity and natural resources.
In February 2026, Patkar also signalled the possibility of opposition unity ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections, indicating that the Congress was exploring political cooperation with like-minded parties to challenge the BJP in Goa.
On May 29, 2026, the All India Congress Committee (AICC) appointed senior leader Girish Chodankar as the new GPCC President, replacing Amit Patkar as part of a fresh organisational restructuring ahead of future political challenges in the state. The Congress leadership formally acknowledged and appreciated Patkar’s contribution to the organisation during his tenure as GPCC chief.
Following the change in leadership, Patkar stated that his commitment to Goa and public service would continue irrespective of any official position, asserting that the fight for Goa’s future and the welfare of its people remains his enduring mission.
