New Delhi, Aug. 12: With the 2027 Goa Assembly elections gradually moving to the centre of the political agenda, the Congress has stepped up its organisational preparations, with Goa Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) President Girish Chodankar, Leader of Opposition Yuri Alemao and AICC Goa in-charge Manikrao Thakare holding a crucial meeting with AICC General Secretary (Organisation) K. C. Venugopal in New Delhi.

The meeting assumes added political significance ahead of AICC President Mallikarjun Kharge’s scheduled visit to Goa on August 17, when the Congress national president is expected to directly interact with the party’s grassroots machinery.

According to the party, the Goa leaders held detailed discussions with Venugopal on strengthening the Congress organisation, energising its grassroots network and consolidating the party across all 40 Assembly constituencies.

The discussions indicate that the Congress high command has begun focusing sharply on Goa, where the party faces the twin challenge of rebuilding its organisation and putting together a formidable political challenge to the BJP in the 2027 Assembly polls.

Kharge visit crucial for grassroots mobilisation

A major part of the Delhi meeting was devoted to preparations for Kharge’s August 17 Goa visit.

Kharge is scheduled to interact with booth-level Congress workers, Block Committees, frontal organisations and District and State office-bearers. The programme is being projected as an attempt to establish direct communication between the party’s national leadership and its grassroots cadre.

Rather than limiting Kharge’s visit to meetings with senior leaders, the Congress appears keen to use the occasion to activate its booth-level machinery — an area that could prove decisive in an election where organisational strength on the ground will matter considerably.

The leadership stressed greater coordination, sustained grassroots engagement and organisational discipline as essential ingredients for building what it described as a “strong, united and election-ready Congress” in Goa.

Delhi meeting sends political message

The presence of Chodankar, Alemao and Thakare together at the meeting with Venugopal also carries a political message. Chodankar heads the State organisation, Alemao leads the Congress legislature wing, while Thakare serves as the crucial link between the Goa unit and the AICC leadership.

Bringing the organisational, legislative and AICC leadership onto a common platform appears to be part of an effort to ensure greater coordination as the party enters the crucial pre-election phase.

For Congress, however, the real test will be whether this show of coordination at the leadership level translates into unity and mobilisation on the ground.

The party has suffered heavily from defections in Goa in the past and will have to convince both its workers and voters that it has learnt lessons from those setbacks. Candidate selection, strengthening booth committees, retaining workers, managing internal aspirations and building a cohesive Opposition strategy are likely to be among the major challenges confronting the leadership.

Against this backdrop, Kharge’s Goa visit could become more than a routine organisational programme. It provides the Congress high command an opportunity to assess the State unit directly, communicate with workers and set the tone for the battle ahead.

The Delhi meeting has therefore effectively sounded the organisational bugle for 2027. The Congress leadership may be talking about renewed energy and collective commitment, but the bigger question is whether it can convert those words into a disciplined, united and battle-ready organisation capable of taking on the BJP when Goa goes to the polls.
