CM Pramod Sawant Backs ‘One Nation, One Election’ Before Joint Parliamentary Committee

Panaji, July 10: Chief Minister Dr. Pramod Sawant on Friday interacted with the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC), led by Member of Parliament P. P. Chaudhary, on the Constitution (One Hundred and Twenty-Ninth Amendment) Bill, 2024, which proposes the implementation of the “One Nation, One Election” framework.

During the interaction, Dr. Sawant congratulated Prime Minister Narendra Modi for initiating what he described as a transformative and futuristic reform aimed at strengthening governance, ensuring policy continuity, reducing the recurring burden of elections, and accelerating India’s journey towards Viksit Bharat @2047.

Presenting Goa’s perspective before the Committee, the Chief Minister said that while elections remain the cornerstone of India’s democracy, the frequent electoral cycle across different States often affects governance, administrative continuity, policy formulation and budgetary planning.

He stated that a synchronised electoral cycle has the potential to provide greater political and administrative stability, enable governments to focus on long-term development, optimise the utilisation of public resources, and further strengthen the spirit of cooperative federalism while fully upholding the constitutional values of the country.

Dr. Sawant reiterated that the Government of Goa extends its full support to the consultative exercise and remains committed to contributing constructively towards reforms that make governance more efficient, transparent and people-centric.

The Joint Parliamentary Committee is currently holding consultations with various stakeholders on the proposed constitutional amendment before finalising its recommendations on the “One Nation, One Election” proposal.
