LoP Yuri Alemao Urges Governor to Recall Cancelled Assembly, Resume Pending Legislative Business

Panaji, April 9, 2026:
Leader of Opposition Yuri Alemao has formally petitioned the Governor to recall the cancelled session of the Goa Legislative Assembly, calling for the immediate resumption of House proceedings to address pending legislative business.

In his communication, Alemao also urged the Speaker and Chief Minister Pramod Sawant to facilitate the reconvening of the Assembly and ensure that unfinished work is taken up without further delay.

Raising concerns over the abrupt curtailment of the recent session, Alemao said the justification cited—Ponda by-elections and enforcement of the Model Code of Conduct—“did not stand scrutiny,” pointing out that legislative assemblies in other regions continued functioning under similar circumstances.

“The sudden closure of the apex democratic institution remains unexplained,” Alemao stated, adding that the situation has now changed following the cancellation of the Ponda by-election by the High Court, removing the earlier cited constraints.

He emphasised that there should be no further impediment to reconvening the Assembly and completing its pending agenda, including crucial Bills.

Alemao further warned that the suspension of legislative business has left several vital issues unattended, particularly those concerning land resources, environmental protection, demographic balance, and the identity of Goa.

Stressing the urgency, he said the people of Goa expect their elected representatives to deliberate on and decide key matters affecting the state’s future.

“The House must resume its work without delay. Goa cannot afford legislative paralysis at a time when its land and future are at stake,” Alemao asserted.

The development comes amid growing political tension following the cancellation of the Ponda by-election and its ripple effects on governance and legislative functioning in the state.
