Congress Delegation Meets Goa Governor, Condemns Rahul Gandhi’s Detention; Seeks Justice for Students

Panaji, July 22: A delegation of the Goa Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC), led by President Girish Chodankar, on Wednesday submitted a memorandum to Goa Governor Shri Pusapati Ashok Gajapathi Raju at Raj Bhavan condemning the detention of Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi and seeking immediate action to address issues concerning students and the country’s education system.

The five-member delegation comprised GPCC President Girish Chodankar, Working Presidents M.K. Shaikh, Adv. Carlos Alvares Ferreira and Sunil Kawthankar, along with Goa Youth Congress President Adv. Archit Naik.

In the memorandum, the Congress expressed concern over Rahul Gandhi’s detention while he was allegedly participating in a peaceful programme in solidarity with students protesting against the Union Government over issues related to the education and examination system. The party described the detention as an attack on democratic values, freedom of expression and the constitutional role of the Opposition.

The GPCC also referred to the incidents of July 20, alleging that protesting students were subjected to force and mistreatment, and called for accountability for those responsible.

The memorandum urged the Governor to forward its demands to the President of India and the Union Government. These include the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over the handling of the education sector, the resignation of Union Home Minister Amit Shah over the alleged suppression of peaceful protests, an impartial inquiry into the alleged use of force against students, withdrawal of criminal cases against protesting students, and a detailed discussion on the issue in both Houses of Parliament.

The Congress further demanded that the Prime Minister issue a public apology to students and initiate comprehensive reforms to make the education and examination systems more transparent, accountable and fair.

The delegation requested the Governor to intervene by forwarding the memorandum to the President of India and the Central Government for appropriate action. Reiterating its stand, the GPCC said it would continue to support students and uphold constitutional values, democratic rights and the demand for a fair and accountable education system.
