Panaji, July 10: A delegation of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Goa on Friday opposed the Constitution (One Hundred and Twenty-Ninth Amendment) Bill, 2024, popularly known as the “One Nation, One Election” Bill, during a consultation meeting held by the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) in Goa.
The AAP delegation, comprising Goa President Valmiki Naik, Gerson Gomes and Shyam Kolamkar, participated in the consultation and submitted a written representation outlining the party’s objections to the proposed constitutional amendment.
In its submission, AAP argued that instead of introducing the “One Nation, One Election” framework, Parliament should prioritise amending the Constitution to address shortcomings in the existing Anti-Defection Law.
The party contended that the Anti-Defection Law is being misused as a “multi-defection law” to topple popularly elected governments, weaken opposition political parties and undermine the democratic process.
AAP urged the Joint Parliamentary Committee to consider electoral reforms that strengthen democracy and safeguard the mandate of the people rather than supporting constitutional changes that, according to the party, could adversely affect India’s democratic and federal structure.
