Margao: As part of Goa Statehood Day celebrations and to commemorate 60 years of the historic Goa Opinion Poll, Madganvcho Awaaz and youth leader Prabhav Naik paid tribute to eminent personalities who played a vital role in protecting Goa’s unique identity, culture and heritage.
Naik honoured the memory of Opinion Poll stalwart Dr. Jack de Sequeira, regarded as the architect of the historic Janmat Kaul. A memento was presented to his daughter, Manuela Maria de Sequeira, in recognition of his visionary leadership in safeguarding Goa’s distinct identity.
The contribution of Bab Shabudad Dessai was also remembered. A memento was presented to his son, Vishal Dessai, acknowledging the role of the iconic Jyot Yatra, which became a symbol of public awakening during the Opinion Poll movement.
Naik also paid tribute to Goem Shaahir Bab Ulhas Buyao, whose powerful songs became the voice of the Janmat Kaul movement. A memento was presented to his wife, Neela Buyao, in recognition of his contribution through music, which continues to remain etched in Goa’s collective memory.
The occasion also honoured Goa’s internationally acclaimed cartoonist Bab Mario de Miranda during his birth centenary year. A memento was presented to his sister, Fatima Miranda Figueiredo, recognising his extraordinary contribution to art, culture and Goa’s global identity.
Speaking on the occasion, Prabhav Naik said Madganvcho Awaaz is observing “Asmitai Vars” to mark 60 years of the historic Opinion Poll and celebrate the spirit of Goa’s identity.
He said the initiative was a small gesture of gratitude towards those who helped shape Goa’s destiny and inspired generations to protect the state’s unique heritage and distinct identity.
