Panaji, September 21, 2026: Senior Aam Aadmi Party leader Francis Coelho has resigned from AAP Goa along with several other party members, bringing fresh attention to the debate over Opposition alignments ahead of the 2027 Goa Assembly elections.

Coelho has presented his decision not as a personal dispute with the party or its leadership, but as a political disagreement over the direction of alliance-building in Goa. According to his stated position, he is no longer in sync with AAP Goa’s current alliance strategy and believes his primary political commitment must remain with Goa.

The development comes barely a week after AAP and the Goa Forward Party formally launched the “Goa First” pre-poll alliance on September 13, positioning it as a non-BJP, non-Congress alternative for the 2027 election. At the launch, AAP national convenor Arvind Kejriwal and GFP president Vijai Sardesai described the two parties as equal partners, while Sardesai said the front remained open to other like-minded political forces.

Coelho’s resignation, however, raises a different question within Goa’s Opposition politics: whether the state needs a separate Opposition front excluding Congress, or a broader consolidation of parties opposed to the BJP.

That debate has become increasingly prominent. Congress has publicly maintained that its doors remain open to forces seeking to oppose the BJP. AICC Goa in-charge Manikrao Thakare said on September 19 that Congress had not closed the door on a possible alliance with GFP and was willing to work with parties seeking to defeat the BJP. The statement followed indications from Sardesai that political “realignment” remained possible.

Earlier, Congress and GFP had held preliminary alliance discussions, while AAP had also indicated openness to working with like-minded parties. The subsequent formation of the AAP-GFP “Goa First” front therefore represented a significant change in the Opposition’s pre-election configuration.

Against this backdrop, Coelho’s departure assumes political significance beyond an organisational resignation.

There is no personal attack or expression of bitterness in his stated reasons for leaving. Instead, Coelho has emphasised that his decision stems from what he describes as a straightforward political conviction — that his first commitment is to Goa.

The essence of his position is: “I entered public life because I love Goa.”

Coelho has indicated that he does not consider himself aligned with AAP Goa’s present alliance politics and has therefore decided to step away in what he considers the best interests of the state.

His resignation also makes clear that he does not regard his departure from AAP as an exit from public life. He has thanked the party leadership and colleagues and stressed that he bears no bitterness or animosity towards anyone.

The resignation consequently adds another voice to the wider debate now unfolding within Goa’s Opposition space — between those pursuing a distinct political front and those advocating a broader coming together ahead of the 2027 election.

For Coelho, the immediate change is his party affiliation. His stated position is that his political engagement and commitment to issues concerning Goa will continue.
